In automotive engineering, an inlet manifold or intake manifold is the part of an engine that supplies the fuel/air mixture to the cylinders.
In contrast, an exhaust manifold collects the exhaust gases from multiple cylinders into a smaller number of pipes – often down to one pipe.
The primary function of the intake manifold is to evenly distribute the combustion mixture or just air in a direct injection engine to each intake port in the cylinder head(s). Even distribution is important to optimize the efficiency and performance of the engine.
The intake manifold is found on each vehicle with an internal combustion engine and plays an important part in the combustion process.
The internal combustion engine, which is designed to function on three timed components, air mixed fuel, spark, and combustion, relies on the intake manifold to enable it breathe. The intake manifold, which is made up of a series of tubes, ensures that the air entering the engine is equally distributed to all of the cylinders. This air is needed during the combustion process's initial stroke.
The intake manifold also aids in the cooling of the cylinders, preventing the engine from overheating. Coolant flows via the manifold to the cylinder heads, where it absorbs heat and lowers engine temperature.
